CCDI Unit (Alzheimer's)

Westview’s special care unit for those with Chronic Confusion and Dementia Illness (CCDI – Alzheimer’s and related illnesses) is designed to meet the needs of those who cannot be safely be cared for in a less structured environment. When the risk of elopement, wandering, anxiety, agitation, or other behaviors makes it impossible to ensure the safety of this special resident or others, the CCDI Unit can fill that need. Our Alzheimer’s unit is locked; therefore, it requires pre-screening by our staff and a special physician’s order for admission.

Due to the highly restrictive nature of our unit (locked), the unit is an ambulatory unit, which means the resident must be able to either walk with stand-by assist only, or use a wheelchair independently.

Our unit is staffed 24 hours a day/7 days a week with qualified staffed specially trained in management of dementia behavior. A professional nurse acts as the unit coordinator, assessing and managing the behavioral issue of the residents.

Each resident has an individual program of care and planned, structured activities. Structure and consistency are of the utmost importance in the management of resident behaviors. By providing numerous daily activities, we are able to occupy the residents, create a feeling of usefulness, and better manage their special needs.

Personal belongings are encouraged in our unit. These provide a sense of home and familiarity which are so essential to the resident’s comfort and mental well-being.

A calm, quiet environment helps us to also create a sense of comfort and home; therefore, we do not allow TV’s in individual rooms. There is a TV in the common area and appropriate programs are played only at certain times of the day.

Rest periods are also essential to the well being of the residents, therefore, we do have restricted visiting hours in our unit. Family members are always welcome, but we do request that they only visit two at a time in order to not over-stimulate their loved one and the other residents of the unit.

Being able to enjoy nature, fresh air, and sunshine are also important. For our residents’ safety and enjoyment, we have a secured courtyard.
