Announcements
Westview Acres Care Center is a participant in the Nursing Home Quality Initiative Program, a national pilot project to develop systems and procedures for quality improvements in the areas of Pressure Ulcers, Depression, Pain, and Restraint Usage.

The NHQI also focuses on culture change in nursing care centers to promote resident-centered care and greater staff satisfaction. We are working very closely with the Iowa Foundation for Medical Care on the quality initiatives and changing the culture of nursing homes.

We are very excited about our participation in this program and are dedicated to making our facility “all about the resident” – where caring is “above all else!”

Dorotha C. White Foundation
Westview Acres is proud to announce our association with the Dorotha C. White Foundation. It is through this association, that Westview is seeking to improve the restorative care for our residents to improve their quality of life while they reside at Westview ACres Care Center.

The Dorotha C. White Foundation has generously donated a piece of exercise equipment from the Nautilius/Bowflex organization for use by our residents to help strengthen and restore the resident.

Dorotha C. White Foundation has also developed an "Adopt a Nursing Home Patient Program that encourages individuals from the community to become involved with residents who may not have family or who's family is unable to visit them at the nursing home.

Advancing Excellence Campaign
For the past two years, Westview Acres has particiated in the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS), Nursing Home Quality Initiative Program. This program is a three year partnership with the Iowa Foundation for Medical Care and CMS. NHQI is a pilot program that concentrated on quality improvement.

During this time we track our facility's performance and numbers in areas such as pressure ulcer development, depression, restraint use, etc. We have also received additional training and education in the prevention of pressure ulcers, depression and restraint usage, as well as receiving additional auditing tools that help us to assess resident care areas more thoroughly.

The second part of this program has us working on reducing staff turnover and bringing our facility in to "culture change" moving toward resident directed care.

As we have entered the third year of this program, we have decided to enter into the American Health Care Association' Advancing Excellence Campaign. This campaign fits right in with our NHQI program and will extend the time we be working on the quality areas from one year to three years.

Advancing Excellence requires us to set at least three goals in two areas. The areas are Clinical and Operational/Process. The goals we will be working on are:

1. Reduction of high-risk ulcers.

2. Improvement of pain management for long-term residents.

3. Assessing family/resident sastisfaction.

4. Increasing staff retention.

All of these will fit very well into our current efforts. We are very proud to be part of both programs. It is our hope that we will become one of the trendsetters in the future of nursing homes and culture change, heading toward greater quality care and promoting the philosophy of resident directed care.

Caregivers - Skilled Nursing Care Plan Program
Westview Acres is extremely excited to announce that we now have a special computer program that can help us determine skilled nursing needs of new admission coming from a hospital setting. This program is called "Caregivers".

Caregivers allows us to pre-screen patients and determine immediately if skilled nursing services are needed and at what level.

Caregivers helps us to develop a very specific care plan that supports skilled nursing and therapy, thus providing valuable and necessary documentation for Medicare payment of services.

We are frequently able to utlize the Medicare benefit a little longer which in turn translates to better care, greater restoration of function and transitioning to a more independent living situation, which is always our ultimate goal. When we are unable to make that transition to a more independent living situation, we can at least be sure that we have helped the patient to acheive their highest practical level of functioning.

Caregivers is unique to Westview. We are the only facility in our area that is utlizing such a program. We feel this helps to make Westview the nursing facility to go when skilled nursing is needed and our track record of success in helping patients to return to a more independent living situation support this.
